What are qualitative research methods?

Qualitative research methods focus on collecting insights from a small number of carefully selected individuals to understand complex human behaviours, motivations, and social contexts through detailed, non-numerical data. Common methods include in-depth interviews, where researchers explore participant perspectives in a conversational style, focus groups, which gather insights from group discussions, and bulletin boards where participants contribute to online discussions over a period of days or weeks.
Focus Group Research

Focus group research

A focus group brings together a small group of participants to discuss a product or topic with a market research moderator, providing diverse perspectives.

IDI research

One-on-one interviews that explore detailed personal views and experiences, allowing for a deep understanding of individual motivations and behaviours.

Ethnographic research

Researchers observe participants in their natural environments to gain insights into cultural and social contexts influencing behavior and decision-making.

OBB research

An online bulletin board (OBB) is a digital platform where participants can post responses at a time of their choosing, enabling in-depth discussion to take place over a period of several days or weeks.

MROC studies

Market research online communities (MROCs) engage a group of participants over an extended period through an online platform to take part in ad hoc or longitudinal research.

UX research

User experience (UX) research evaluates how users interact with a product or service to improve design and functionality based on direct user feedback and observation.

CX research

Customer experience (CX) research focuses on understanding how customers interact with and feel about a company or a product throughout their buying journey.

Video survey research

Participants record video responses to survey questions, providing rich, expressive insights and the convenience of visual and verbal feedback.
vox pop research studies

Vox pops

Popular opinion as represented by informal comments via video in an interview style from members of the public usually at random or within an informal setting.

What are quantitative research methods?

Quantitative research methods collect numerical data and use statistical analysis to quantify variables and uncover patterns. Common methods include online, telephone and face-to-face surveys using structured questionnaires to gather data from large populations, and experiments which test hypotheses under controlled conditions. These approaches allow for objective measurement and quantifiable findings.

Online survey research

Distribute questionnaires through digital platforms to quickly collect data from a broad audience, making it easy to analyze and quantify responses.

CATI research

Computer-assisted telephone interviewing involves human interviewers working from a software-controlled script to ask questions and enter responses in real time.
CAPI Quantitative Market Research

CAPI research

Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) involving human interviews using a table to interview participants face-to-face. Collecting feedback about a location/place.
